Book:  Blanch on the Lam by Barbara Neeley

Description: Blanche White is a plump, feisty, middle-aged African-American housekeeper working for the genteel rich in North Carolina. But when an employer stiffs her, and her checks bounce, she goes on the lam, hiding out as a maid for a wealthy family at their summer home.

That plan goes awry when there's a murder and Blanche becomes the prime suspect. So she's forced to use her savvy, her sharp wit, and her old-girl network of domestic workers to discover the truth and save her own skin. Along the way, she lays bare the quirks of southern society with humor, irony, and a biting commentary that makes her one of the most memorable and original characters ever to appear in mystery fiction.

Book:  Cooking for Picasso by Camille Aubray

This book would be good for a month when we need a lighter book. Much of it takes place in a small town on the French Riviera where Picasso is hiding out in 1936. Seventeen year old Ondine is delivering meals to Picasso and preparing them for him. Ondine’s American granddaughter, Celine, learns about this for the first time in 2013. It appears that Picasso may have painted Ondine and given her one of the paintings she sat for. Celine’s mother becomes very ill and Celine replaces her mother and accompanies her aunt to take a cooking class near the grandmother’s village. Celine hopes to find the painting and sell it so that she can provide quality care for her ill mother.

Book:  Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach

Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our body’s postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers―some willingly, some unwittingly―have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. In this fascinating account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries and tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.
